\"Contador Affair\": UCI takes a stand

UCI learned of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to impose a suspension of 2 years following the Alberto Contador appeal, as the Doping Agency (WADA), in the case against the Spanish rider.

In rejecting defense arguments concerning especially the consumption of contaminated meat that would have been the cause of the presence in urine of clembuterol Alberto Contador, the judgment confirms the position of the UCI.

This is not a feeling of satisfaction that the CAS decision sparked with the UCI, which has welcomed the news as the culmination of a long case, extremely painful for cycling. The UCI President, Pat McQuaid said in effect: "It's a sad day for our sport: some might think that we won, but that's not true at all. There is never a winner when it comes to doping: each case, regardless of variations, is still one too many.

Doping: Contador suspended two years and deprived of his victory in the Tour de France 2010

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has made its decision on "the case Contador". The Spanish rider was sentenced to two-year suspension for his doping test during the Tour de France 2010.

He loses the benefit of his victory in the Tour 2010, the Luxembourg Andy Schleck finished in second place. Suspended until August 6, 2012, it will not be aligned at the start of the next Tour de France.

Contador's victories gained in 2011, the Giro, are also lost by the Spanish rider, now aged 29.

The decision was taken by the CAS arbitral panel composed of the Israeli Efraim Barack, the Swiss Quentin Byrne-Sutton and Germany's Ulrich Haas. The CAS, which imposed two year suspension retroactive to January 25, 2011, took into account the temporary suspension of Contador, nearly six months between August 2010 and February 2011.

The case arose July 21, 2010 when Contador, then yellow jersey of the Tour de France, has undergone a drug test which was positive due to minute traces (50 picograms) of clenbuterol, an illegal substance.

Contador, who pleaded food contamination to explain the presence of traces of clenbuterol in its analyzes, had been acquitted at trial by his federation in February 2011.

He was thus able to run normally during last season and won the Giro before finishing fifth in the Tour de France.

Contador is a member since 2011 of the Saxo Bank team led by Bjarne Riis. This year, he began by winning two stages of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina.
