Prologue Payerne
Payerne
Payerne is located next to the Broye River, to the east of Lake Neuchâtel, and south-west of Lake Morat and Lake Bienne. It is the capital of the Broye-Vully District and is ideally situated between Berne and Lausanne. It was built around its Abbey Church, the largest Romanesque church in Switzerland dating back to the 10th century. In 2024, Payerne had over 10,500 inhabitants. In addition to its buildings, the Vaud town offers many sporting and cultural activities, particularly renowned events in French-speaking Switzerland. It is also home to many local stores and businesses. Payerne is a dynamic town combining history, culture, nature and modernity, offering its inhabitants an excellent quality of life and its visitors a memorable experience.
1st stage Château d’Oex-Fribourg
Château-d’Oex
Welcome to the Pays d’Enhaut region! Nestled on the heights of Lake Geneva in the heart of the Vaud Alps, this little paradise has a surprise round every corner. Far from external disturbances and urban stress, symbolising elevation, purity and transcendence, these mountains offer exceptional benefits. In summer and winter alike, the municipalities of Château d’Oex, Rougemont and Rossinière offer a real change of scenery, fun, cultural and sporting activities as well as original and festive events. Known far and wide for its International Hot Air Balloon Festival, Château d’Oex is home to many treasures that can be appreciated all year round.
1st stage Château d’Oex-Fribourg
Fribourg
since its 1st edition in 1947, the Tour de Romandie has stopped off in Fribourg 27 times, with big names like Ferdi Kübler, Jacques Anquetil and Paolo Savoldelli all making their mark there. The start of the 2nd stage will therefore provide an opportunity to discover the new Place du Fair-Play, a multi-sports hub at the gates of Fribourg. As for the final of the 1st stage, it will be an opportunity to rediscover the exceptional built heritage of the historic old town known as Basse-Ville. The organisation of these stages is the result of collaboration between the Vélo-Club Fribourg cycling club and the City.
2nd stage Fribourg-Salvan/Les Marécottes
Salvan Les Marécottes
Accessible by rail with the Mont-Blanc Express or by road after crossing the impressive Gueuroz Bridge, the municipality of Salvan and the villages that make it up (Les Granges, Les Marécottes, Le Trétien, La Creusaz) are like a corner of heaven for mountain lovers.
3rd stage Oron
Oron
The municipality of Oron welcomed the Tour de Romandie in April 2021, with a perfectly successful edition in terms of sport but unfortunately altered by the absence of public, due to COVID. To remedy this shortcoming, Oron is going to put the bandage back on in 2024 by inviting the TdR to our municipality. What satisfaction and what an honour for the Organising Committee and the Authorities to be once again entrusted with a stage which will bring magnificent visibility to our beautiful region. Everyone is looking forward to it and the success of the fundraising dinner organised in November 2023 demonstrated the Region of Oron’s great interest in this event.
4th stage Saillon-Leysin
Saillon
There is something for everyone in Saillon, for the family, for senior citizens in search of recreation, for those who enjoy open-air sport. This municipality offers an idyllic setting that lends itself to relaxation, to discovering pretty trails and to appreciating an atmosphere steeped in history. Come and enjoy an experience in which mediaeval authenticity, natural beauty and culinary refinement blend together in harmony, inviting every kind of visitor to marvel at the various charms of Saillon.
4th stage Saillon-Leysin
Leysin
Leysin can undoubtedly set its sights on the title of “Alpine cycling capital”. The ongoing tourist planning, which will see new routes developed in synergy with our two sports centres, as well as our proximity with Aigle – home to the headquarters of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) – give us this legitimate ambition. So it is with honour that we welcome the riders, the Tour caravan and the public of enthusiasts. They are at home here more than anywhere else. Because we love cycling with a passion, we have said it. Because, in our Alpine universe, we know the rigour and the suffering of effort.
5th stage Vernier
Vernier
The biggest suburban town in the Genevan agglomeration, Vernier is a municipality full of contrast. Its territory is home to a mix of residential areas, industrial zones and commercial activities, not to mention its natural spaces. During the 20th century, Vernier experienced a significant demographic boost with the creation of several large rental developments. In spite of everything, it has kept the agricultural soul found in its village whose main street is edged with old farms.
About the Tour de Romandie
L’idée de créer une course cycliste en Romandie est née en 1946 autour d’une fondue entre Max Girardet, André Jaccrd, Fernand Jayet et Paul Denier, membres du comité directeur de l’Union Cycliste Suisse (UCS).
Originally, it was intended to be a one-off event organised to mark the UCS’ 50th birthday. The very first edition thus saw the day one year later, during the Ascension weekend. Ten teams of four riders were invited, representing 11 different bike brands, mainly Swiss ones. Désiré Keteleer was the big winner of this race, the first in a long list that continues to lengthen year after year.
Julian Cerviño – Patrick Testuz, « Tour de Romandie – Dans la roue de l’histoire »
The calendrier UCI WorldTour calendar has now been bringing together the world’s finest cycling races, including the Tour de Romandie, for several years. The biggest stage races – in particular, the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España – as well as the most prestigious one-day events such as Paris-Roubaix or Il Lombardia, are also part of this calendar.
The quality of the sporting show is guaranteed by the participation of the best teams – and, therefore, the best riders – in the 37 events of the UCI WorldTour. The UCI WorldTeams, which are carefully selected according to ethical, financial, administrative, organisational and, above all, sporting criteria, participate in all the events on this calendar, which is an international circuit with individual and team classifications.
Thanks to the quality of its organisation and its strategic position in the calendar, the Tour de Romandie attracts the very best riders.
